COOL COLORS

It’s hot as HECK and even though autumn is just a few weeks away, cool colors are STILL on my mind. For one thing, it doesn’t feel like fall to me and my patio thermometer backs me up telling me that my feeling that we’re still smack dab in the middle of summer is right on Target. And when I’m still wearing shorts and sweating like wild, I like to surround myself with cool colors, don’t you?

CHARACTERISTICS of COOL COLORS

Not only is it lovely that shades of blue, violet and green make me think of cool, refreshing ocean water, they are especially useful in decorating a small bedroom because they tend to recede or feel as if they are pulling away from you which make the room seem bigger! Not a bad thing when decorating a dorm room or a small bedroom in an apartment.

It’s so hard to let go of airy colors like turquoise blue and teal green that bring lazy days at the beach to mind or colors that remind me of that visit to the farmers market where I got inspiration to decorate a master bedroom with colors that I pulled from the fruit and vegetables that I saw there.

But even though summer feels as if it’s dragging on and on and on and the heat outside is unbearable I have to grind the gears and shift my decorating focus from breezy and colorful to fall colors. Looking back on the last few month’s inspiration boards it’s easy to see that the season inspired the purchase of more than a few beach bedding sets with fabrics in cool colors that reflect the soft and breezy atmosphere of a cottage at the shore resplendent with cool shades of blue balanced by neutral colors and plenty of texture.

Looking at my notes detailing some teen girl bedroom decorating ideas with pictures, the blue and yellow color scheme of the comforter she chose makes me think of sitting on the porch of a beach cottage, sipping a cold glass of lemonade and enjoying the breezes blowing in from the ocean. If you have any imagination at all you should see why I’m being dragged into decorating for fall kicking and screaming!

Oh well, the first crisp breeze that blows my way will have me out shopping for teen girls bedding sets in earth tones and cool colors will be on my back burner until next spring.

TEEN GIRLS HEART BEDDING

What do you think about the bedroom in the picture with the teen girls heart bedding set? I saw a bedroom decorating question regarding this comforter set that got me thinking about how small decorative decisions can take a bedroom's design in one direction or another.

The girl who wrote in said that she loved the polka dot and heart print fabric of the comforter set and the contrasting pattern of the striped bedskirt but didn't like the "dressed up" look of the picture of the bedroom on the bedding set's packaging and wanted to know how to decorate her room in a funky fashion using the girl's heart bedding.

I think I would go for a shabby chic look using a chipped iron bed frame and I would ditch the matching curtains. Just because you buy a bed in a bag doesn't mean you have to use the window treatments. Sell them, toss them or whatever; if you don't like them don't destroy the look of your room just because you feel wasteful. Aluminum foil over the windows is better than buying drapery hardware and taking the time to hang curtains that you hate.

Getting back to the teen girls bedroom design problem, as I said, I would keep the teen girls heart bedding set and decorate the bedroom in a funky, shabby chic style. How do YOU decorate a bedroom when you are after a stylish look but don't want anything fancy?

AQUA BEDDING SETS - BEACH COTTAGE BEDROOM IDEAS

The surf’s up and the ocean temps are rising. Requests for aqua bedding sets and aqua bedroom ideas start rolling in almost as predictably and reliably as the ebb and flow of the endless tide. This seasonal color trend in teenage girls’ bedroom decor has yet to miss a year for as long as I’ve been involved in bedroom design.

Even when I lived way up north where summer was so late to arrive that the mention of swimming never occurred to me until late June, teens came back from spring break with the intention of bringing their tropical vacation home with them. You could count on these well traveled young girls having ideas of decorating their bedrooms based on decorations that were used in their rented beach cabana and the many shades of blue they saw reflected in the sea. Aqua blue bedding is always a big hit in one style or another.

PATTERNS and PRINTS

Stripes and polka dots have been very popular with this age group but there have been more than a few beach bunnies lately that have chosen blue floral bedding over navy, teal and aqua bedding in plaids, stripes or polka dots. When I say floral, this is not your grandmother’s floral print. These tropical prints are as far from granny’s flowers as a palm leaf is from old fashioned ivy. Splashes and layers of ice blue aqua graphics grounded by teal green and navy are as fresh and bracing as salt spray no matter how many miles you happen to be from the nearest beach or your favorite island.

SHEETS

If your teenage girl likes to mix it up, even with tropical print aqua blue bedding sets, there is still room for a few dots or stripes. Black and white polka dot sheets might be the perfect background for the wild aqua blue bedding set even if the comforter is covered in bright green hibiscus flowers.

THE WALLS

An aqua bedroom is a natural choice for a beach cottage look. If the idea of being surrounded by four aqua walls is unappealing, consider painting three walls white and paint an accent wall a shade of aqua that matches your aqua bedding set.

GIRLS BUTTERFLY BEDDING ENSEMBLES

There are as many styles of girls butterfly bedding as there are species of butterflies themselves. And the colors that these bedding ensembles come in are as delectable as can be when it comes to decorating a bedroom for a teenage girl or a nature lover of any age or sex.

FUNKY BUTTERFLIES

Hippies in the psychedelic days of flower power and acid trips were prone to gilding the lily when it came to butterflies. They liked their insects in giant sizes and in wild, funky colors like turquoise blue, lime green, hot pink and purple. This is not to say that you would be unable to find and identify these elegant insects sporting these colors. But it would be ever so doubtful to find an unfortunate species with wings that were covered in a hodgepodge mix all at once.

Such is not the case with teenage girls butterfly bedding and comforter sets in turquoise blue and lime green. Bright butterfly bedding sets in this color combination are not considered unseemly or weird. In fact, pumpkin orange might be added to the color scheme by some decorators just for giggles.

NATURAL BUTTERFLY BEDDING SETS

Not every teenage girl (or her concerned mother) prefers butterfly bedding sets designed with graphics and images out of some drugged out stoner’s bad trip. There are many that enjoy the designs that naturally occur on the wings of these delicate creatures in nature. For these sensitive young ladies there are comforters with pastel fabric prints showcasing butterflies that are light as air. Floating over backgrounds in whatever color you wish, you will find the stately monarch flitting happily in scenery that depicts perpetual spring of the year and ready to be the focal point of a girl’s garden bedroom.
